I contracted AWR to install a retaining wall, a planter and grade my yard and remove the debris. The Quote came in at $12,800. Tony (my contractor) is a nice enough guy, but I did not hire a buddy for just that reason, I wanted a foreman. Here is how it went down: Day one a truck pulls up with a skip loader on a dump truck, cool! He comes up to me and asked me "what do you want me to do"? Um, I don't know, I thought you would know? Nope... Well we talked about where the wall was going so he went to work and moved the dirt over to the middle of my yard. I asked if he was going to take it, nope, he can't because there is too much mixed debris in it like chain link fence and so on. Um, okay, and away he goes. Well, during his excavation he cracked my pool main filter circulation water line so when the pool filter came on it proceeded to empty the pool of water and fill it with mud, nice..
My wife and I cleaned up the mess that night and I cut the power to the filter system and let them know what happened. Everything was easy to get to, so I just cut out and fixed the PVC myself with a couple of couplers and pipe, had the pool guy come out and get the mud out. Hey, stuff happens so I just let it go. The guys come to work on the retaining wall and that went pretty well, footing was poured, rebar added, cinder blocks, stucco, boom good! They come to do the large planter and right away (I am the foreman again) I can see that all the dirt and debris from the skip loader is going to be in the way. I call Tony and he comes over and tells me it's a lot of dirt, you are going to have to pay to remove it! Um, what? Yes, and it is going to cost $1,700 for them to do it. Wait, it clearly stated "contractor to remove all debris to a legal dump yard" and was mentioned no less than 3 times for each phase. Now I pretty much felt like my progress was much being held hostage unless I agreed to this additional cost. I got the fee down to $1,275 and I was really exhausted from the whole thing, and I was getting to the "I just need closure" point. So, the area is clear and they start the large planer. Due to the grade the hillside and the poolside there are going to be 4 blocks high and taking on a little load. They laid the footing and started adding the blocks and pouring concrete in them with NO REBAR! I told them to stop! Made it clear that wall was going to fall over I it needs the rebar, now the funny part is the rebar was all cut and ready to go just laying a few feet away. They just did not put it in when they poured the footing. Now it gets interesting. At this point you could drill holes into the footing and insert the rebar and pour on that, nope! They took the rebar and hammered in into the concrete footing basically cracking it all up, exciting stuff right?
Well, finally the planter is installed, we are on the home stretch. Just need to put in the sprinkler system and sod, and remove a palm tree stump. So the crew rolls in and gets to work. They guy removing the tree stump is trying to do it with a Sawzall, yup, a Sawzall. I tell him to please stop, there is no way it's going to be right. He just ignores me and chops away at it until 8:00 PM at night (4 hours) and as you would guess (rolling eyes) it looks like hell. Okay, be calm, be calm, lets go look at the sod in the planter. What in the heck is that! I guess they thought I would not notice the sod was dead? Keep in mind it is only 2 hours old in the pic. Turned on the sprinkler (they only installed one) and it flew out of the ground and flooded the planter. Sent pic to Tony and he promised to fix it, and he did) but here is the problem. I kind of feel like these were just guys pulled from craigslist and sent to my house. I was going to discuss this before I posted it with Tony in person but for reasons I am not at liberty to say he just told me to take a pic of the front and back of the last check and text it to him, so I did and I guess that is that. Final Cost including repair and extra fee $14,400
